During the summer I did an number of illustrations of my Grandparents. They made great studies as I could really work on the exaggerated lines and angles.

Emotive

Emotive is a book competition held every year. The focus word this year is Emotive, E or Motive. I am focusing in on the motives of memories. relating this to where i have traveled so far in my life. remembering back to my home town and the memories I have taken away from it.

Orchestra book cover design

Brief: to create a coffee table book. entitled Orchestra, your design does not have to be the entire book, but can simply be the front and back cover. The book cover can be anything you want as long as it en-captures and aspect of the word Orchestra. Important points to remember would be that the cover is a wrap around. This is to say that the cover is ongoing all the way round, so your design must fit in with this. The dimensions of the book cover are 305 mm, by 255 mm.

In this post we will take a close look at the final project of design student Yash Misra as he takes a new approach to newspaper design and shares his process and ideas with us. I'm always amazed by design process and here is a very interesting one, check it out!

Yash Misra is a graphic design student, continously exploring the field. As it is, the field had interested him from the very beginning. There has always been a sort of glamour in the posters, brochures, websites etc, which he saw. He likes to explore deep into print media, especially publication.

One Page Newspaper

As my final year class room project, I decided to take up the Newspaper design. A newspaper essentially poses a very complex system design and information design challenge. As for my insights which claimed:

Newspapers and other printed modes of communication today face a severe onslaught from the digital media and platforms. They are fast becoming a commodity of luxury in terms of time, money and energy. Attention span of the user has grown lesser day by day. There is too much of distraction from all sorts of information being targeted for his attention.To get the real news/information, he needs to pass through many layers to get it. The complete newspaper of over 20 pages reduces to mere 4 pages of essential and selective reading, as the reader doesnt have the complete time to read the entire news, though he wished he had been able to read everything.

I tried to see how much news can be accommodated into one page. I tried only the headlines. Kept the size of the newspaper same.

This made me realize, that this is probably not the best solution. Too much text is intimidating. The news hierarchy is not clear at all. Only 35 news items were included, which excluded most of the economics and the complete sports

After this I am straight away going to the final solution. There are intermediate steps which range from the twitter like solution to complete paragraph based news. Trying to get a balance out of the extremes, here I present the final solution.

To keep few things in mind, my proposed newspaper has all the 50-60 news items, except editorial. Top 25 news are accompanied with a supporting paragraph which detail out the news ( of course we need to re-look at the way text is composed). After that the each item is a well written headline. Accompanied with each news item is the reporter/agency name and the place. We also have regulars like Market Indices/ temperature/ Currency/ Crude oil/ daily cartoon. All of this comes on the front side. The back is left for classifieds and the ads. A small space is also provided for the ads on the front page, depends on the number of news items.

This is where I am able to achieve all the 53 news items which are the total items, excluding the editorial. The second side is left for the classifieds and ads.

The top half contains the major news for the day from all the sections. It accompanies the first para of the complete article and is sufficient to have the complete summary of the news. The bolder the news the more important it is. The color of the captions on top tell which section the news belongs to.

The lower half has got the remaining news items set nicely in comfortable columns.

The legend on top helps the reader to navigate and relate various news items just by seeing the colors of the captions.

The name explains the purpose and the function of the newspaper.

As this is one of my first posts on Abduzeedo I decided to write a quite unconventional one. I'm a regular reader of Abduzeedo since about a half year - I'll never regret - but articles about printed mediums are pretty rare on Abduzeedo. So, in this post I'll show you some newspaper designs that are great in my opinion. Also, there's a great video from the TED Talks by Jacek Utko on how design can save newspapers.

Die Presse am Sonntag

I'm Austrian, therefore it's pretty normal to subscribe to an Austrian newspaper. "Die Presse am Sonntag " is the sunday edition of the daily paper "Die Presse".

They have a great layout and quality journalism, but the sunday edition is even better designed:

The Rzeczpospolita won an award at the 27th competition of newspaper design of the SND (Society of Newspaper Design). In my opinion this newspaper really deserved this award, although the whole design's quite conservatie and traditional.

The Future of Newspaper Design

I saw this post today on core77 and I thought it was a great story to share it with our Abduzeedo readers. I'm sure you've all heard the notion that "print is a dying medium." Advertising in print is down, and seems to continue declining, because more people are going online to read content.

So what do we do? Do we just write Print's obituary and sit around remembering it fondly, or do we try to salvage it? A brand new daily publication in Portugal, simply titled i, is trying something new and they are getting positive results. i's circulation had increased from 11,000 in May to 16,000 in August.

So how are they doing it?

i is not structured like a traditional paper. The paper's team worked with media consultancy Innovation to come up with a new way to organise the product. "Our feeling was," said Figueiredo, who came on board at an early stage, moving from Diário Económico, "that people were not concerned about traditional sections any more. Traditionally, journalists have to fill a politics section even if there is nothing relevant going on in politics. We wanted to come up with something different." So the team came up with five key needs that they wanted the paper to address, with five key words.

A New Design

Apart from restructuring the content, they've also broken away from the traditional minimal design of a newspaper and they have gone for a more magazine-like approach.

Nick Mrozowski, i's American art director, said that "I think the overriding concept, not just in the design but in the newspaper as a whole, is that we want to try to set out to produce a magazine every day." The 56- to 64-page paper is tabloid size and stapled, so looks as much like a magazine as a newspaper.

A huge amount of work goes into designing the paper every day. At first, Mrozowski explained, the idea was that the paper would have a template that would leave some pages fixed each time, meaning that some pages would require no design work on a daily basis and that editors would simply put their content into the pre-designed format. "But from day one that strategy fell apart," he said. "We realised that the sort of paper we were making had a lot of very specialised content and each page would have to be custom-made to the needs of a reporter or editor."

Of course this appeals to me as a graphic designer but I wonder if this can become too much work to keep up with. By restructuring their content areas they were able to alleviate the need to fill up whole sections with worthless news, but now I feel that the pressure to deliver has been transferred over to the design aspect of the newspaper. Only time will tell if this proves to be the case. I really hope this newspaper continues to be successful. I hope it inspires other newspapers.
