Comic Book Artist: Frank Frazetta

Although Frank was more about a Illustrator than a penciler or a colorist, it's quite undeniable that he influenced whole generations of comic book artists. He just defined the main image of heroes as Conan, Tarzan, Vampirella and also created a whole fantasy universe, in a really unique and unbelievable way. Unfortunately, Frank died on 2010 of a stroke, but his legacy will go on with full strength as all his paintings.

Comic Book Artist: Jim Lee

I think Jim Lee is one these artists that really doesn't need any presentations. If you already read some of the DC, Marvel or Wildstorm comics from the 80's to nowadays, you probably stumbled with some of his covers and pages. In my point of view, he's the best penciller that ever worked for these major companies, a truly master of his tools, always pushing further on style and concept.

Awesome Creepy Zombies by André de Freitas

Zombies are all over the place. The 2nd season of The Walking Dead has just began and people are all freaking out because of the outbreak. I mean, what would you do if Iron Man became a zombie? Hide you kids, tell you that.

The man behind these is Peruvian illustrator André de Freitas (who is definitely sporting a Brazilian name there). These are pretty awesome, and creepy with you image zombies with super powers. Comic books lovers everywhere gotta love when they get to see a beautifully designed comics app. The secret for a good comic app lays in its simplicity. Cool simplicity, I must say.

This is the Sad Comics app, a project by HonkFu, a art group based in Russia. I must say that there are many great Russian designers yet to be found, and these guys are an example. This guy is a truly talented artist, and his work makes me wish even more I could illustration. I mean, just look at these... they're fantastic! All these lines in his work remind me of Raúl Trevino's work (from last week's post), which is pretty cool. Both get these rough, sketchy feel to it. Badass Illustrations by Dan Hipp

Dan Hipp is a truly incredible illustrator, he have done works for comic labels as DC Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Tokyopop, and Del Rey Books. He even made a graphic novel for the character Ben 10, but what really got my attention in his work are his recent illustrations and doodles that I found on his blog.

This guy got an awesome trace, really easy to recognize and a impressive knowledge of how to use color, using a lot of soft gradients and light colors. Also, you wil probably notice that he got an amazing sense of humor and seems to like to add it to his illustrations.

Dan Hipp is a cartoonist whose graphic novels include the epic revenge series GYAKUSHU!, as well as the super-natural, rock, adventure series THE AMAZING JOY BUZZARDS, both of which have been translated and published in other countries. His work can be seen in the BEN 10: ALIEN FORCE "DOOM DIMENSION" graphic novels, which he illustrated. His artwork has appeared in DC Comics, Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Tokyopop, and Del Rey Books. He maintains his zombie survival training by watching monster movies and coaching Water Polo. When he's not talking to himself in the third person he's making nerdy pop-culture art just for you. (Dan's Blog)

9 Awesome Web Comic Series

The internet is a wonderful and beautiful thing. It used to be that if you had the talent to draw your own comics you were still limited by the avenues of distribution like newspapers and magazines. Now all you need is a computer and a small chunk of change (some web design skills wouldn't hurt.). Here are 9 of my favorite web comics that I think you will also like.

Diesel Sweeties

You 8-bit graphic lovers out there will like this one because it's illustrated in an 8-bit style, but the videogame nostalgia ends there. It takes place in a world were robots exist and even have relationships with humans. It's very witty and fun to read.

Cyanide & Happiness

This is one of my favorite web comic series. It's very simply drawn and so dark in its humor. They also produce animated versions of their comics which are incredible as well

Freak Angels

A very popular web comic written by Warren Ellis, an experienced writer who has worked with Marvel, DC, Image, and others, and an amazing illustrator named Paul Duffield. It's a more classic comic-book style.

The Brads

Brad Colbow is web designer and illustrator. He also releases a web comic series titled "The Brads" which is about two web designers making fun of the issues that some designers face with their clients and technology. If you're a designer you will certainly enjoy this comic. You might have seen his work in Smashing Magazine or Vector Tuts.

Octopus Pie

Octopus Pie is an ongoing comic series about two women living in Brooklyn, NY - their jobs, social circles, and some problems.

Ctrl+Alt+Del

A sci-fi/geek/videogame culture comic in the same vein as Penny Arcade. One awesome thing that they do is a choose-your-own-adventure style mini-series where they ask readers to email which decision should the character make.

Antics Comics

This one is similar to Cyanide & Happiness. Dark humor and simple drawing style.

Creased Comics

It's really a bunch of comics and video-comics in one. They are weird, dark, and funny.

Penny Arcade

And last but not least, Penny Arcade, the godfathers of web comics. A geek-culture comic strip about videos games, role playing games, movies, and even fatherhood. They've expanded into a little geek empire with an online TV series, an animation series, and 3-day gaming festivals held on both coasts of the U.S. WIRED magazine even did a nice profile on them in 2009, read it here.

Calvin and Hobbes Collection

I've been writing here at Abduzeedo for almost 3 years now and I have absolutely no idea how come I've never posted about Calvin and Hobbes. Bill Watterson's creation gotta be the reason why I love illustration.

Or I just might be exaggerating, but that gotta be really close to reality. I've been reading Calvin and Hobbes comics since childhood, and it just never gets old. This must be the masterpiece of comic strips (in my humble opinion). And also, there's tons of fan art around the web, really good ones, and even sculptures. Really worth checking out. Amazing Vintage Comics by Francesco Francavilla

A good way of finishing the week is reading a good, vintage comic book, right? Definitely. The awesome thing about vintage comics is the absolutely awesome style, which is pure eye candy.

Logo Inspiration: Comic Characters

Everyone likes superheroes and other comic book characters. There is a plethora of stories and with subjects ranging from humor to the morbid. Comic books are deeply rooted in global culture, so that today we have several film adaptations of great box office.

Something that is very interesting is when we see superheroes as brands, some of them are easily identifiable by color and shapes. I usually say that the most famous are precisely those that are most remembered. So I decided to make a selection with the logos of super heroes that I thought were the most important and also my favorites. Hope you enjoy it.

Incredible Illustrations by Mitch & Elizabeth

I am a huge admirer of comic book art work with being brought up around them from a young age. I am always on the look out from creative and inspirational work and the work being showcased is just that! Mitch (mbreitweiser) and his wife Elizabeth (dismang) both work side by side producing fantastic work.

A little bit about Mitch & Elizabeth

I've been drawing exclusively for Marvel since 2006. I've been really fortunate to be on some really great projects including, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Captain America: The Chosen, Sub Mariner 70th Anniversary Special (Which also featured the last work of the late Al Williamson (a personal hero of mine)), and a handful of other great cover and interior projects.

My most recent book on the shelf was Captain America # 607 with Ed Brubaker and Butch Guice. I also have a four issue mini series coming out in September called "Captain America: Patriot." it's beautifully written by Karl Kessel, and will be the first full mini series colored by my wife, Bettie.

Bettie has also been the colorist for the AWESOME Agents of Atlas series over artist, Gabriel Hardman. She'll also be following him onto his run on The Hulk this fall!
