Signalnoise T-shirts Available Now!

James White, a great friend and one of our favorite digital artist out there, has just released his new venture, the Signalnoise T-shirts. James has been contributing and helping with Abduzeedo since the very beginning and we are more than happy to feature his new venture.

I am very proud to announce the official launch of the Signalnoise line of designer t-shirts, now available for purchase in the Signalnoise Store. This project has been many years in the making, and I’m really excited to offer some new, fun apparel.

The Story

I’ve been a designer for my entire adult life from 1998 to 2010, working at a variety of local agencies here in Halifax as well as working on a freelance basis for many big international clients. For the duration of that time I have never stopped working on personal projects on my own time, continuing to push forward with my personal skills and ambitions as an independent artist. One of the dreams I’ve had since my teens is designing my own line of cool and fun t-shirts.

So, in June of 2010, I decided the time for talk was over. I quit my full-time design job to properly invest my own time and money into the Signalnoise line of designer t-shirts, which I am excited to unveil today. I wanted to do everything my own way in order to keep that same level of excitement I had back in my teens when I started thinking about my own t-shirts. The shirts are sketched, designed, printed, packed and shipped right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia with no investors, business loans or start-up cash. 100% of the investment is my own, and inspired by guys like Scott Hansen, Johnny Cupcakes and Joshua Smith who are rockin’ it independently. This is grassroots, man. Right where I want to be.

This project has also brought me back to illustration, something I’ve been doing since the age of 4 but was replaced in recent years by the computer. I’m happy to be taking Signalnoise into a new direction that brings me back to where I started, with a pencil and a piece of paper. Although this time around, I won’t be stealing mom’s good typewriter paper. :)

On top of that, I took great care in creating the supporting materials to promote my t-shirt line, including the packaging, freebies, look book, photography and the commercial you see above. I saw the commercial as a challenge because I’ve never created one before, so I wrote, designed and edited the whole thing just to see if I could do it. And with the help of a few friends the whole thing came together in a hilarious way. Huge thanks to Nick Campbell for creating the awesome 3D Signalnoise intro sequence, Chris Toms for shooting all the video and photographs, and Lucas Gardiner for creating the excellent music track. You guys rule.

About the Shirts

All of the Signalnoise t-shirts are printed right here in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I even had to haul all the boxes back here myself. All are silk-screened on Gildan 2000 t-shirts: 100% Cotton preshrunk, double needle top-stitched neckline, double stitched sleeve and waist hems, and seamless collar with taped neck and shoulders.

These 4 designs are currently available in S, M, L, XL and XXL on unisex t-shirts. I will be offering ladies cuts in the near future as I expand, but for now I only have unisex versions of the designs. All t-shirt orders are shipped in a quality, black zip-locked bag to protect from moisture, along with a free swag bag which contains Signalnoise stickers, buttons and other little fun items as a way of saying thanks for your support.

This first run is fairly limited, so if you are looking at grabbing one of the kick-off Signalnoise shirts you might want to hurry in case they go fast! Ordering begins today for this first run and shipping will begin next week.

In Conclusion

Will this Signalnoise t-shirt line be a successful endeavor? Well, only time will tell. But I can promise you I will be working as hard as I can to bring new and fun ideas to this project, both from the design side and the promotional side. This has been a dream of mine for quite some time, so it's time to put the pedal to the metal.

Abduzeedo is moved by 80's inspiration. We've seen many cool designs lately... also, there's the music, there are the movies (Tron!! Awesome), and we couldn't just forget tees featuring 80's themes. These are really fun, and just remind us of the coolest decade ever.

Who hides behind the name Draco?

Well, My name is Edno Pereira Jr, I'm from Nova Iguaçu - RJ - Brazil, I'm self taught, and I always Ilustrated since a little kid, but being an illustrator or designer weren't exactly my dream as a child, but, I couldn't run from my destiny and today I work on Hiperativa www.hiperativa.com.br, a web agency that has big clients Brazil such as americanas, shoptime, ig and more.

When and how did you first start getting into design and illustrations?

Drawing was always a good way to pass the time, and the transition between fun and work happened naturally. I don't know exactly when I started my interest, but since a little kid I liked to see drawing cartoons and paintings. I think it was one of the first things that messed with my curiosity.

How was this transition from drawing cartoons to start illustrating on a computer?

It was when I first bought a PC, about 10 years ago, since I was already drawing, I started to produce some digital material, started with photoshop, not knowing anything. By then I didn't have internet so no tutorials at all. It took a while but I learned my way around the program, and after some time I started doing vectors, which is what I like the most, today 80% of the work I do are vectors illustrations.

How was the transition of being an illustrator to becoming a t-shirt designer?

It kinda started for no reason, one day I was surfing the web when I found www.camiseteria.com.br (It's kinda like threadless from Brazil) I was very interested and started to post my illustrations in form of t-shirt designs, I started to like doing that when my designs began to get approved and was getting a good money out of it so I looked for other sites that had the same system of work and never stopped.

How long did it take to start getting noticed and actually selling your artwork to big companies?

If I'm not wrong, it took about 6 month. At first the biggest challenge was to try to understand what kind of designs they liked the most, but after some time I realized that I had to do what I liked and not work on what other people would like, from tha point my work started getting bigger and better and my designs started getting acepted in a lot of places.

Tell us about other projects you have.

As a right now I work in a design agency and that's taking most of my time, and we all know that whoever works on an agency never has time for any personal projects, but slowly I'm getting back to an old project I always had that is to create a studio to work on drawing cartoons like the ones we see on the newspaper. It's a complicated project but very soon you guys will hear about it.

Besides that another project that I have going right now is www.imaginatee.com which is a site where I put up free t-shirt templates to help the people who send works to any t-shirt contest website. This project was born by the difficulty I had on finding photos of people wearing t-shirts where I could place my work in before it actually got printed, I believe everybody on this area needs those templates and I decided to create a place where we all can find what we need and help everyone.

What would you like to say to the young artists who are just starting to work on this area?

For everyone that is just beginning their journey I have to say: The first step is to keep an eye on good designers on the area, look up for designs to learn what is good and what is not, and bet on your on design feelings. It's important to understand the criticism that is always going to be there, and learn to separate things. I don't agree with that because before it's called a design I think it's an art and there is no such thing as something wrong when it comes to art, it depends on the taste of who is looking at it, you either like it or not but nothing is wrong, but always listen to suggestions, and the ones that hate on your work you can always ignore :)

Abduzeedo's 2nd Anniversary - T-Shirt Contest Result, Giveaway and other Announcements

On December 19th of 2006 I posted my very first article here, on what I would now call a website rather than just a blog. The whole idea behind Abduzeedo was that it would be my personal blog, where I could share some of my design experiments. This evolved into the tutorials we have now.

Back in 2006, when I decided to start Abduzeedo, I was going through a very difficult time in my business life... my office had been stolen and I had lost all my equipment, computer and backups. So I thought Abduzeedo would be a good way to save my "stuff" online. Then last January Fabiano and Paulo started writing articles, and a few months later Aloa joined the team.

After 2 years, I have to say, Abduzeedo has become my main activity. I have to thank you all for visiting the blog, commenting on the articles, criticizing, and helping me to evolve professionally by sharing ideas and experiments. Also I'd like to thank all the sponsors that have allowed us to keep the blog up, and of course the contributors that have posted incredible articles.

As it's time to celebrate we will do a different giveaway from what we normally do. Instead of giving the prize to a reader who leaves a comment we thought it would be nice make a sort of a scavenger hunt.

How will that work? Well, we've placed 2 images in 2 OLD Abduzeedo Articles (meaning that today's wallpaper post doesn't count). The first 2 readers who find the image will have to send a twitter message to Abduzeedo (http://twitter.com/abduzeedo) saying: "@abduzeedo Happy Birthday Abduzeedo. The image is here: link".

The image is a 2 Years Anniversary Wallpaper. The tutorial for it will be published next week.
