Introducing the Amazing Charles Bergquist

Recently I discovered this huge talented director and photographer named Charles Bergquist. He's actually a common character on the USA indie electronic scene, doing a lot video and photography stuff for some of the artists of the Ghostly International record label. Most of you may not know that but I also dig a lot motion graphics, art direction and video editing. Charles is for sure a great master on this three crafts, just take a look on the videos and photos below and you will surely notice see his mastership.

Case Study: Cafeka by Studio Alopra

Today we are going to show a irreverent project done by Studio Alopra, Cafeka is a oustanding experimental project realized with the will to mix stop motion with 2D animation. This is probably our first case study about a video/animation, so I hope you guys enjoy and also learn something from the steps took on this production.

As the directors told me, this production was developed during more than one year, with everyone of the studio involved. During the 4 nights at the location 600 frames were generated from this final photo shoot and at least 400 of cups of coffee were used. Brainstorm and Storyboard

All this idea of mixing concepts relates to coffee and the writer Kafka ("Cafeka") began on a brainstorm between the directors of Alopra on a late night day. The main idea was to develop a visual concept that could express the metamorphosis of Kafka but also using the coffee as a analogy. As you can see, the movie go quite similar with the original storyboard.

Pencil tests

Having the ideas set, the first thing they had to do was to create and develop the 2D animations that would be engraved on the coffee cups. This was a really important step, since not only the number of frames were going to be defines, but also the number of cups. The drawings in this step are just sketches, later they will receive a ink and shadowing using the pointilism technique.

Acetate sheets and Studio Photo shoot

In this part, the original drawings were engraved on the cups, by using acetates sheets involved on them. This was quite necessary, since this was the way that they could understand how the drawing would be on the round cup chape. To avoid waste they used both sides of the cups, later they would donate all the cups as gifts to cliente and friends.

Having all set, they tried a first photo shoot inside Alopra Studio, to undersand aspects like animation speed, number of frames and time limit.

Final Photo shoot

After all theses tests and studies, they made a 4 nights photo shoot at Café da Oca. If the help of a professional photographer to take the photos, they had enough material to start editing.

Post-production

After the photo shoot, the photos needed some treatment. So, after many hours of work in Photoshop, trying to adjust color levels, light and retouch minor flaws, they had all the material to do the animation. Also, they hired a Sound Studio to create the soundtrack.

Rodolfo Roth is a 3D artist from Porto Alegre, Brazil. He has been doing some incredible works for Santa Motion, a super cool studio in Porto Alegre. Rodolfo has a major in Graphic Design and despite his young age, he has more than 8 years of experience in the CG field.

Inspiring 3D and Motion Works by Marcelo Souza

Marcelo Souza is a 3D Animator/Generalist from Brazil with more than 12 years of experience working at all stages of the production pipeline. From the pre-production to the final compositing. Passing through the modeling, rigging, shading, lighting texturing, animation, editing and post production of the piece. As he says"In Brazil we are not able to work just on a single step of the production". We have to work always as 3D Generalists."

Marcelo was one of the greatest inspirations I had to start Abduzeedo. He was the founder and ran a very important site in the 3D/Animation/Design community in Brazil called 3donline. That was in the early 2000s. It was a very active community and I learned a lot from participating and sharing ideas with those guys.

As you may have noticed, i am from Brazil... I live in one of the biggest/richest countries on America. But, unfortunatelly, the money is on the governments hands, and we, honest citzens, just suffer month-by-month, with high taxes. :(

So,i just cannot afford to pay for Animation Mentor Classes right now. It's about lack of money and time for it (Fulltime job and family).

Some works

I like a LOT to animate, but never sat down and did some proper and deeper study on it. I have a bunch of animation books, and read them from time to time, but never followed any animation training program.

Impressive Work of Mato Atom

Mato Atom is a young self-taught director, art director and designer from Switzerland. He moved to New York in 2005 to work at a downtown motion graphics boutique called Psyop. After a year there he followed his own as an independed director focused on personal work in addition to work for global marketers.

I really wanted to make a video of London while I was there earlier this year but I didn't had any camcorder, so I took pictures instead. The film was produced in stop-motion over 3 weeks in Autumn 2008. A Few weeks ago we featured a studio from Porto Alegre, our town called, Santa. As we said that time, their work is very impressive and for really big clients back here. Now, in this post we will feature the work of Lucas Kazakevicius - www.lkalavera.com, one of the ninjas behind that studio. Lucas' skills are in Maya, Real Flow, 3ds max, Fume FX and others, also he works for Casulo another studio from Porto Alegre.

My name is Lucas Kazakevicius, 19 years old. I currently work at Santa Motion, and Casulo, in Porto Alegre, Brazil as a 3D generalist. My focus is towards VFX (dynamics and rendering).

I like intelligent and challenging work. Playing poker, drinking coke and listening to punk/rock music while waiting for renders isn't too bad either :)
