Art Saves - Projeto Região Serrana

Thinking that art can really save, Urban Arts and artists Guilherme Marconi and Eduardo Recife joined forces to create a really nice project, the “Projeto Região Serrana” (PRS) - a initiative that will donate 100% of sales from products of recognized artists to help the cities destroyed by the rain in Rio de Janeiro. The PRS counts with the participation of UA artists and other guests invited specially for this occasion.

Take part of this cause of Art and Solidarity. Buy an art and spread the word about PRS! Art can save, but to do that your help is an important part of the process.

We really like ideas like this one and we feel proud of taking part on it. Art and solidarity can really save... so we count on you to spread the word. =)

As some of you may know, my name is Guilherme Marconi and I live in Nova Friburgo, Rio de Janeiro. Recently we passed trough a terrible tragedy, and a lot of people died, in some families, all the family died. There is a lot of people that don't have a house to go, because the landslide covered they're house or it too dangerous for them to go back. And here guys, I can see it very closely. I didn't die, but I lost friends and I saw people loosing family members, so I decided that I couldn't stay still, just looking this terrible image.

With the support of Urban Arts and Andre Diniz, a series of items will be available to sell and 100% of the sales of this products will be reverted to help Nova Friburgo (mountains region of RJ), where the rain destroyed almost everything.

International purchases will be available soon.

One Hundred Project

The ONEHUNDRED Project is an experiment from the German Kid Grandios that started back in 2009 with the idea of creating posters that would include landscape and grunge elements. One Hundred posters later the project is done and it's amazing, check it out!

ONEHUNDRED Project

I started the project in fall 2009. The idea was to create a poster which includes landscape and grunge elements. Therefore I commenced collecting some images. Not all photos are taken by myself but some friends helped me.

The landscape moves from the green mountains in argentina to the cold icefields at the northpole.For the most part I tried to capture the characteristic color of each terretory and apply a grunge effect that matches. Also I wanted to achieve a huge vareity of different color schemes.

For these effects I used Photoshop. It really took some time to create 100 different patterns.About 20-40min for each pattern.

A major aspect of the project is the connection between nature and the numbers. This represens the calculated beauty of natural elements and how they get destroyed.

Project Study: Doritos Package

What started as a school project turned out to be a very serious concept of a new package for Doritos. In the created hands of the student and designers Petar Pavlov everything is designed for a reason and here you will learn everything about this package design project. The whole project started as a student exercise where I was supposed to work on an open-brief provided by YCN (http://www.ycnonline.com/).

At the beginning of my research regarding this project, I analyzed what makes Doritos different than its competition. The result was obvious: its shape and its texture. So this was the starting point in the design.

I started looking for everything that contained a triangular shape. The first thing that struck my mind was the tetrahedron, used in the famous Tetra Pak packaging (http://bit.ly/hv9Oq). I spent a lot of time trying to 'force' this packaging form to work for the chips, but I never succeeded in doing that. That was an important lesson for me: "You can never force something to happen in design. The final solution should 'land' as a feather without any kind of pressure."

After confronting with this failure, I extended my search in some new areas: origami (http://bit.ly/18wMZX) and paper tessellation (http://bit.ly/10LhVo). This gave me a totally new angle in the concept. But one important part was still missing: a link between the packaging and the original homeland of the chips, Mexico. So I digged deep into the Mexican history which brought me to their ancient ancestors, the Aztecs and their recognizable sculptures, the totem poles (http://bit.ly/CCQoh).

This was the breakthrough in the project. Afterward I started making some sketches and creating small paper models in order to test the solutions.

During this phase I came up with the final form of the packaging which resembled to a simplified totem, and even had an extra feature: the structure kept the packaging closed after opening. If it wasn't for the small paper models, I would have never discovered this. That's why moving out from the computer work during a project is important.

The packaging can be made out of environmentally friendly cardboard. What's good about this material is its natural texture which slightly resembles to the one of the chips. The form of the packaging is its structure which can keep the chips closed after opening. Below you can see a scaled-down model of how this works.

Brand-wise, this solution will differentiate Doritos from any other competition and build a strong 'shelf effect'.

The other good side about this concept are the triangular faces which beside the ergonomic value, create a perfect canvas for expressive illustrations. That's why I'm inviting every designer willing for collaboration to create a personal artwork which will reflect the attributes of the Doritos chips. The directions are endless, we can focus on visualizing the taste, visualizing the main ingredients or even recreating the reaction after eating some ULTRA HOT SPICY Doritos!

Inspiration: State of Mind Project

This is a incredible project where the Russian Egor Bashakov put up approximately 2700 1"badges to make his on self portrait which is insane, after all the work and patience that took him it came out great, have a look it yourself.

2700 (approximately) of 1" badge pins, plywood 135 x 110 cm;

The artwork is called "State of Mine", it is a self portrait. The author tried visualize & interpret his own sight of the essence, by splitting it into aspects and using them as ingredients.
The name of artwork explains it, it's a word-play. Expression State of Mind meas the particular condition that something or someone is in it at a specific time. The word state has also a meaning of a physical condition as internal or molecular from or structure, for instance: water in a liquid state. Precisely that artist had in view, by doing this structural portrait. He tried to show his psychological and physical condition. So he developed each symbol and placed it on a badge. The author needed to use his certain state of mind, to develop each symbol, so he tried to be spontaneous in decisions and quick in developing. Experiment - try to catch every thought and extract a symbol of it, so every badge could describe a personality in that period.
