Astonishing Surreal Illustrations by Ryohei Hase

What makes an illustration good? Is it the style? Is is the theme? Or is it the product of a whole set of qualities and feelings put into the canvas? Probably the last. Probably none. Probably you.

Ok, I'm just kidding. Whenever I post surreal illustrations I tend to write crazy things... but none of this makes the work of Ryohei Hase, a Japanese illustrator, less astonishing. These are some crazy, well detailed, BIG images. Here are some samples of his work, but I truly recommend you to check out these in his DeviantART gallery for full-sized glory. Go ahead, just click the images. These would definitely be great as wallpapers in my desktop. I wish Ryohei would release some wallpaper versions of these. Anyways, I hope you enjoy these as much as I did. Cheers! ;)

Surrealist Drawings by Reality-must-die

I have been working on a few designs heavily inspired by the Surrealism, because of that I was looking for some references and visual artists that are influenced by this style as well. Then I stumbled upon Reality-must-die at DeviantArt. I couldn't get much information about him, I know he is from Germany, but I was totally mesmerized by his surrealistic drawings that I had to feature him here on Abduzeedo.

The Expressive and Surreal Work of Mark Ryden

Mark Ryden is a great painter and one of the most celebrated artists of the Pop Surrealism movement. His pieces are stunting, expressive and they transmit a good feeling. His work takes us to a kind of parallel world, almost a deja vu. Ryden studied illustration and graduated at the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, in 1987.

Upon first glance Ryden’s work seems to mirror the Surrealists’ fascination with the subconscious and collective memories. However, Ryden transcends the initial Surrealists’ strategies by consciously choosing subject matter loaded with cultural connotation. His dewy vixens, cuddly plush pets, alchemical symbols, religious emblems, primordial landscapes and slabs of meat challenge his audience not necessarily with their own oddity but with the introduction of their soothing cultural familiarity into unsettling circumstances.

Viewers are initially drawn in by the comforting beauty of Ryden’s pop-culture references, then challenged by their circumstances, and finally transported to the artist’s final intent – a world where creatures speak from a place of childlike honesty about the state of mankind and our relationships with ourselves, each other and our past.

I really loved his pieces, specially Rose (the first one at this list), which I saw at a tv show once and tried to find it for a long period with no success. This image was in my head for months... but then this week I was browsing around and found it... so I decided to show this and other great pieces from this very talented artist! I'm a big fan of Surrealism. The whole concept of trying to express the subconscious and dreams through art is very fascinating to me. Some of the paintings by Salvador Dali and Max Ernst are really intriguing. Every time you look, you have a different interpretation of what they meant to express. And these days we've been seeing a lot of that in the digital art world; what they call Neosurrealism.

Neosurrealism is a combined imagery of dreams, fantasies, and subconscious mind visions in fine art painting, digital art graphic, and photography. In the mid 1980s, modern computer technologies brought a large amount of additional depicting power to contemporary artists not possible by hand. The arrival of desktop publishing and the introduction of software applications introduced a generation of artists to computer image manipulation and 3D image creation that had previously been unachievable. There are thousands of artists, digital and traditional fine art media, who create neo-surrealistic, surreal fantasy, and fantasy realism artworks comparable to Neosurrealism.
