RAWZ Light Effects in Photoshop

Last Friday we launched our new way for users to submit work for the Daily Inspiration at Abduzeedo. We call it RAWZ or Abduzeedo Raw Inspiration. Anybody can submit their work and we will select some to be featured on Abduzeedo. We also created a logo in Illustrator and then this cool effect in Photoshop, inspired by Tron.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create the RAWZ light effect in Photoshop. It's a beginner/intermediate tutorial and it will take you 45 minutes to go through it. I hope you have fun doing it as much as I had.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. With the Paint Bucket Tool (G) fill the background layer with black.

Step 2

To create a carbon fiber texture is quite simple. Create a new document and using the Rectangle Tool (U) create squares in black, grey and dark grey like the image below. That will be the base for our pattern. Notice that the size is really small.

Step 3

With the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M) create a square selection like in the image below.

Step 4

Go to Edit>Define Pattern. Name it Carbon Fiber. That was it for the pattern part.

Step 5

Back to the document of our design, add a new layer and fill it with black too. Then go to Layer>Layer Style>Gradient Overlay. Use dark grey for the colors. The darker one will be at the bottom. Also change the Blend Mode to Multiply.

Step 6

Select Pattern Overlay, then for the Pattern select the Carbon Fiber we created in the previous steps. Also change the Scale to 60%.

Step 7

Here is our carbon fiber background.

Step 8

Import the logo you would like to use. In my case I am using the RAWZ logo I created in Illustrator.

Step 9

Go to Layer>Layer Style. Select Drop Shadow. For the Blend Mode use Color Burn at 50% Opacity, 90• for the Angle, 2 pixels for Distance and 5 pixels for the Size.

Step 10

Select Stroke and then use 3 pixels for the Size, Inside for the Position, 95% for the Opacity and then for the color use #5c7a92, #000000, #5c7a92, #5c7a92, #000000, #5c7a92. For the Style use Linear and for the Angle use 90º.

Step 11

Here is the logo with the Layer Styles.

To create the neon light in the middle is quite simple. I did that in Illustrator and imported to Photoshop.

Step 13

Select the layer you want to apply the neon effect and go to Layer>Layer Style. Select Drop Shadow. For the color use black, with Color Burn for the Blend Mode at 100% for the Opacity. For the Angle use 90º and then 2 pixels for the Distance and 3 pixels for the Size.

Step 14

Selec Outer Glow. For the Blend Mode use Screen, for the Opacity use 100% and blue (#00a2ff) for the color. Change the Spread to 0 and the Size to 9 pixels.

Step 15

Select Inner Glow. Use Lighten for the Blend Mode with cyan for the color. Also select Edge and change the Size to 10 pixels. Over the Quality change the Contour to the same as in the image below.

Step 16

Here is the result after the Layer Styles.

Step 17

Add a new layer and group it into a folder. Change the folder's Blend Mode to Color Dodge and then with the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft brush, 0 hardness, and then paint some spots ver the neon to create those light spots you can see in the image below.

Step 18

Add a new layer inside the folder with color dodge and fill it with the carbon fiber pattern. Create a marquee selection of the neon layer by clicking on the thumbnail of the layer holding Command (Mac)/Control (PC), then with the layer with the carbon fiber pattern selected, go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal Selection. That will create really nice light effect on the neon.

Step 19

Here is what we have gotten so far.

Step 20

Select all layers and duplicate them, after that merge all the new layers into one and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius.

Step 21

Duplicate the blurry layer again, and change the Blend Mode of the one that is underneath to Overlay and the one on top to Screen.

Step 22

Group both layers into a folder and change the Opacity to 50%.

Step 23

Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Photo Filter. Use Cyan for the Filter with 50% Density.

Conclusion

Here is the final result. As you can see, the whole process is quite simple and this technique is very versatile, I use it all the time. The cool new thing I believe we learn here is how to create the carbon fiber background. So now it's up to you.

Interview with Chuck Anderson aka NoPattern

Chuck Anderson aka NoPattern is one of my favourite designers out there! He changed the freelance industry for the greater good of future designers like us. Entitled with the nickname of the 'Master of Light Effects', Chuck Anderson recently facelift his website with new works and features.

Chuck is also involved in several charities like Charity: Water, WordMadeFlesh and many more! I had the honour to ask him some questions about his philosophy, his knowledge and things that will make you see that Chuck is a successful designer but also an down-to-earth kind of guy with lots of great values.

1. First of all, we would like to thank you for taking your time for this interview with Abduzeedo. For those that aren't familiar with you, tell us a little bit of yourself?

Thank you for interviewing me and for all the continued support Abduzeedo has given my work and the design community. As for me, I'm an artist & designer and have been running my studio NoPattern for nearly 8 years now. I do a lot of work with clients like Microsoft, Reebok, Nike, Vans, and UltimateEars, among others, and do a lot of my own personal work, much of which is available at my online store NPandco.com . The best way to learn about me and my work is to just look through my site NoPattern.com and get a feel for the work and collaborations I've done over the years.

2. Congratulations for your new website, tell us about the new things on your site?

I'm super excited about the new site - it's been a very long time coming. I'd had the same NoPattern site for about 4 years and finally decided it was time for a serious overhaul. I needed a more efficient CMS first off. A backend that would be more effective for the sheer quantity of work I've accumulated over so many years. That was the first hurdle. The second thing was simply wanting a new visual & organizational way to show my work.

The new site allows you to organize by client, type, and year - which makes a lot of sense when you're trying to show close to 100 individual client projects. And check out what happens when you resize my site - keep an eye on all the project images. Fun little easter egg...As for the actual new content on the site, there are a few new projects including collaborations with UnderArmour, Target, FootJoy, and Gizmodo with more projects coming soon with new clients like UltimateEars, Mead, and CAT Footwear. I also took the (very long) time to rephotograph all my work for the site, for example http://www.nopattern.com/work/detail/burton-light-camo-collection which was a great thing to have done but took a ton of time and a lot of hard work. Totally worth doing though.

3. How important it is for you the balance between commercial and personal work for you?

It's important but the reality is I spend 90% of my creating time on commercial work now, which is actually quite fine with me since my clients almost always ask me to experiment and be as creative as I'd be with a personal project, so I'm not complaining at all. On the flipside, my new site is of course considered personal work, my new online store and all the prints available are personal work, all the promoting I do of my brand and work on Twitter, Facebook, etc. is personal work, so while most of the 'creating' time is spent on client work, a large portion of my overall time is spent on all that stuff. Man, I don't know, as long as I'm having fun and making a living from what I love to do I'm happy.

4. You have the design nickname of being the "Master of Lights Effects", how do you feel about that?

I'm not sure how I feel about that. I don't really know where that comes from or anything but I guess if anyone thinks of me and my work in that way it's flattering. Not sure what else to say on that one...I don't consider myself to be a master of anything, except maybe my 2 cats. Ha.

5. On last June, you went to Ethiopia for the Charity: Water.org, tell us a little bit of story and how was your experience?

It was a great experience. It came about while I was in Washington DC at a Summit Series event while speaking with my friend Scott Harrison, the founder of Charity Water. He simply asked me if I'd like to join him and a group of others on a trip to Ethiopia to see what it is they're doing over there and ultimately to help raise money for their cause, which I was thrilled to do. It was a great trip, I saw a lot, met some great people, and have just been floored by the continued success Charity Water has continued to have.

6. What do you feel is the most common mistake that you see other designers do?

Relying too heavily on stock imagery and the internet for resources; not stepping outside what you know and doing new things for yourself. It's not that that's a mistake necessarily, but I just hate to see entire portfolios of things that are half created by the designer and half created by someone they've never even met. I'm just a big believer in a deliberate collaboration or doing everything in your work yourself, 100%, unless you're working for a client and need images that are impossible to get otherwise. Stock has its place, I just hate to see people using it as a crutch and never stretching themselves enough to learn to do new things themselves.

7. What is the one thing in the world that you wish to design or had designed?

That's a great but very difficult question. I'm so grateful for all the amazing opportunities I've already had to be honest, I don't think a lot about "what I'd REALLY like to do" because I'm already doing it. I'm very content when it comes to the projects I've worked on and am working on now. I guess I'd really love to collaborate with a few brands I haven't worked with yet like Apple (although my Windows 7 work may haunt me there), Prada (mainly from seeing what they hired James Jean to do ( James Jean Prada III), Bell & Ross watches.

8. And plans for the future, any new projects?

I have several plans for personal projects I'll be launching this year. One of my big next steps is to begin curating and/or publishing - basically I'm working on a few ways that will serve as outlets for me to give a platform to other creative people I admire whether that's through a book, a design 'news' type site, interviews, or whatever, I really want to start using my platform as a way to give people I admire and up-and-comers some new exposure.

9. Once again, thank you very much for the interview. As a final word, inspired by John C. Jay (http://bit.ly/h8S2PK). What are your 10 lessons for young designers?

1. Be open minded to different styles & aesthetics when you're just getting started. It's great to be really good at one thing, but it's even better to be great at that one thing and also pretty good and a few others too. Your talents and portfolio should have a well-rounded depth, ideally.

2. Non-profit/working for free can be a great way to get started and get a portfolio some depth but just be aware of the difference between contributing a sensible about of work & time versus letting yourself be exploited and taken advantage of.

3. Learn more than just Photoshop. Life drawing, photography, painting, anything by hand. Do it if you aren't already. It will help you in the long run in all you do.

4. Find inspiration outside the internet - start by spending a few hours in a bookstore.

5. Don't be shy about what you do. If you're ready to put it out there for the world to see, be ready to come off confident and determined.

6. Writeoffs/taxes. Save all your receipts!!!

7. Invest in quality technology/equipment. If you need a better/faster computer, figure out what you need to do to make that happen and do it. You can write it off and it's the primary thing you're using to make your work.

8. Just ask. People on design sites, Twitter, Facebook, etc., are willing to help, you just need to humble yourself when it's time to ask for advice. Everyone had to do it at some point with someone.

9. Don't be annoying. Writing an email to someone you look up to is fine, but remember people are busy. Give it a few days before you follow up or, if its a potential new client, before you call to ask if they got it. They probably did. Patience is key.

10. Make sure you're having fun.

Tron Legacy Tutorial

Since the very first time I saw the trailer of Tron Legacy I decided that I would have to try to do something inspired on that, all those light effects were exactly what I always love to do in Photoshop. Then I saw the James White design inspired by Tron and I was damn it, James nailed it. So I postponed my little experiment, however this week I decided that the time had come and so, I decided to recreate the logo effect we see in the trailer.

For this tutorial I used Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Cinema 4D. Pretty much all the light effects and composition are done in Photoshop, the other apps were used just to create some shapes and elements, so if you want to do just the Photoshop part, in the of the tutorial there is a ZIP file with all the resource files used for this image.

Step 1

The first thing to do is find or create the logotype of Tron Legacy. I found a vector file online with it. Then open it in Illustrator and convert the strokes to fill (Object>Path>Outline Stroke). Export the file in a very low version of Illustrator, I'm using Illustrator 8.

Step 2

Once you have the vector logo it's time to create the 3D version of it. We could use Photoshop Repoussé to create that but I decided to do it in Cinema 4D because I've been practicing more with it. So once you import the shape just apply a basic extrusion. You can download the Cinema 4D file in the end of the tutorial

Step 3

One thing that was really cool with the Tron Legacy logo was that sort of digital pattern it has in the light effect, so to create that I used a simple Tiles texture for my material, that is a default preset in Cinema 4D. The color is not important because we will change that in Photoshop later on.

Step 4

Here is the Objects I have in Cinema 4D, as you can see there is all the shapes with the Extrude NURBS and the material. I also added 2 lights and a camera to get the right perspective.

Step 5

Here is the final render in Cinema 4d. You can download the TIFF file in the end of the tutorial.

Step 6 - Photoshop

Open the logo in Photoshop and now let's start editing and creating the light effects. The first thing to do is change the Hue and Saturation. Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Use 190 for the Hue, 50 for the Saturation and 0 for the Lightness.

Step 7

Go to Image>Adjustment>Levels. Change the black input to 30, the grey input to 1 and the white input to 131.

Step 8

Import the vector logo and make sure it's black, you can add a color overlay through Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay.

Step 9

Go to Edit>Transform>Scale, reduce the size so it's a size between the front and the back faces.

Step 10

Go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 15 pixels for the Radius.

Step 11

Duplicate the layer in order to make this dark effect darker.

Step 12

Import the vector logo again and position it in front of the 3D logo, this will be the neon effect.

Step 13

Go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Use #86f7fe for the color with 60% Opacity. Also over the Blending Options, reduce the Fill color to 0%.

Step 14

After that select Inner Glow. Use Color Dodge for the Blend Mode at 50% Opacity. For the color use white. Change the Source to Edge and use 0% for the Choke and 10 pixels for the Size.

Step 15

Select Inner Shadow. Use Color Dodge for the Blend Mode with White for the color at 50%. Use 120º for the Angle, 8 pixels for the Distance, 0% for the Choke and 10 pixels for the Size.

Step 16

Now, select Drop Shadow. Use Screen for the Blend Mode with white for the color at 50%. For the Distance use 0, for the Spread 15% and for the Size 30 pixels.

Step 17

The last option will be Outer Glow. Use Color Dodge for the Blend Mode, 100% for the Opacity, white for the Color. Them for the Spread and Size use 0.

Step 18

Now go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. Use 195 for the Hue, 90 for the Saturation, -20 for the Lightness.

Step 19

Select all layers including the background and duplicate them, after that merge all the duplicated layers into a new one and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the radius.

Step 20

Change the Blend Mode of the blurry layer to Screen at 80% Opacity.

Step 21

Again go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. Use 7 for the Hue, 50 for the Saturation and 0 for the Lightness.

Step 22

Again select all the layers and duplicate them, after that merge the duplicated layers into just one. You can do that using the keyboard shortcut Command (MAC)/ Control (PC) + Alt + Shift + E. After that just change the Blend Mode to Screen at 50% Opacity.

Step 23 - Logo Conclusion

The Tron logo is pretty much done, as you can see we were able to create the nice 3D/light efect as we see in the trailer and we used basically Blend Modes and Adjustment Layers. For the Legacy text I used Helvetica Neue Ultra Light with a nice teal glow. You can save your file and end the tutorial here, but I want to show you how I created the whole composition.

You can group all these layers and name the folder logo. Also you can duplicate the group and merge it into a layer so we will use only that file in the end of the tutorial. As it has a black background, change its Blend Mode to Screen as well, then hide it.

Layer Order

This is the layers order. You can see that it's quite simple.

Step 25

To create the composition like we see in the posters and in the trailer the first thing we will need is a city skyline photo to use in the background. The one I used is from Shutterstock and you can find it here http://www.shutterstock.com/pic-66610090/stock-photo-new-york-cityscape..... So basically just desaturate the image (Image>Adjustment>Desaturate) and then go to Image>Adjustments>Levels and increase the black inputs and the white inputs. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur and use something around 10-20 pixels for the Radius. The idea is make it very blurry.

Step 26

Now go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. Use 190 for the Hue, 40 for the Saturation and -50 for the Lightness. Also select the Colorize option. This adjustment layer will give that teal color to the image.

Step 27

Back to Illustrator create a few rounded rectangles using the Rounded Rectangle Tool. Also create a few circles and an empty space where it will be the sort of highaway crossing the grid.

Step 28

Copy the shapes in Illustrator and paste that in Photoshop, below the the Adjustment Layer. Also make sure the vectors are white so you will make them teal. Once you paste the grid from Illustrator, go to Edit>Transform>Distort. Distort the layer to get the perspective like the image below.

Step 29

Go to Filter>Blur>Guassian Blur. Use 5 pixels for the Radius.

Step 30

Duplicate this layer and move it down a few pixels and then change the Opacity to 20%. That will create the reflection in the grid.

Step 31

Duplicate the grid layer again and move it above the Adjustment Layer. Group this copy into a folder and change the folder's Blend Mode to Color Dodge. After that select the layer inside the folder and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10-15 pixels for the radius. That will depend on the shapes you created.

Step 32

Hide the city skyline layer and then select all the layers and duplicate them, after that merge all the duplicated layers into one layer only then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius.

Step 33

Change the Blend Mode of that layer to Screen at 100% Opacity. Also make the city skyline layer visible again.

Step 34

Add a layer on top of the others and with the Paint Bucket Tool (G), change the type to Pattern and fill this layer with a scanline pattern. To create this scanline pattern is pretty easy. Just create a new document of 100x4 pixels and then create a rectangle of 100x2 in black. Also make sure that the background is white. Merge all layers and then go to Edit>Define Pattern. Just name it and that is it.

With the Eraser Tool (E) delete the pattern area that is above the city skyline, the idea is that the effect will be visible only in the grid and city.

Step 35

Change the Blend Mode of the Pattern to Overlay at 15%.

Conclusion

Now make the Tron logo layer visible again and position it in the center of the composition. After that add a new layer and go to Filter>Render>Render Clouds. Make sure you had black and white for the colors. Then change the Blend Mode to Screen and the Opacity to 40%. With the Eraser Tool (E) you can delete pretty much all the areas close to the edges leaving only the area that is behind the logo and a bit on top of it.

You can also add the same pattern overlay effect over the Legacy text to give that nice digital touch. Once again everything we did was done using simple tools and techniques mixed together, the most difficult part is understand and organize the thoughts, the software part is all about trial and error. So now it's up to you.

Reader Tutorial: The Revolution Artwork by Aoiro Studio

There we are about one month since my last tutorial with Abduzeedo! And here am I again with another tutorial for you guys! First I wanted to thank Abduzeedo again for giving me this great opportunity for sharing my knowledge. I will show you how to create a super light effect using blending options, shapes and tools in Photoshop.

This was an artwork for a cover album named: "The Revolution". The idea behind this artwork was to combine the colors of Trance music and the evolution. I did some researchs on Trance albums and they seems to use a lot the blue color so I picked blue. I could have chosen some red for expressing the evolution but why not orange! I wanted to make it different! I won't be telling you all the steps in detail but I'll be giving you hints that will help you make your "own"design.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. The size I am using is 2560x1600 pixels. Then you take the gradient tool (g) and you make a gradient using "Foreground to Background", so from black to a dark blue (#050655)

Step 2

Now type the word: "REVOLUTION" and place it right in the middle. I've used the font named: "Dekar" and you can find in the in the Weekly Friday Fresh Free Fonts of Abduzeedo. Here's the link. Next rasterize the layer type.

After I wanted to create a little perspective view with my word "REVOLUTION"; so I took the perspective tool and I dragged each side of my word to make it kind of go in the back. It gives the impression that the word "REVOLUTION" has been pulled towards the back a little.

Step 3

Ok, let's start to have some fun! I duplicate the "REVOLUTION" Layer and added a borderline by using a white stroke of 2 pixels. Then you select the whole layer and erase the content of the layer. What would be left, would be the white stroke of the word "REVOLUTION". This is my technique for making an easy stroke line. Then I placed it to give it some kind of a 3D look.

Step 4

Then I've used the same technique I did for my World Collabs 3 Winner Artwork Tutorial to create a white base by using the "outer glow" of the blending options. After create a new layer and take the radial gradient tool (g) and use "Foreground to Transparent" from black to cyan (#00d2ff). Don't forget to blend the layer to "overlay&quot;.

Step 5

Let's add some flares! I took the same flares that Abduzeedo used on his Easy Casino Style Sign in Photoshop Tutorial. The flares are from an image and you can download it here. After resizing the image and deleting all the parts that you won't need from the image; I just placed them randomly and duplicate it and resize it.

Step 6

After I added some lighting lines and I went crazy! It's the same process like the flares, you place them and duplicate them but don't forget to blend the layer to "overlay". Just play with the lines, have a concept and try to be creative!

Step 7

Afterwards, I added some stock shapes from my library, I blended them in the background of the word "REVOLUTION" and I also added a few shapes where the foreground color were black. I wanted to create some depth for the background. I knew I would be adding another color to my design, so I didn't wanted to be too full of rich colors.

Step 8

Now it's time to add the new elements and color. Like I said earlier, I decide to choose the orange color; what I did here it's I filled my shapes with the orange color (#fb863a) and played with the blending options. In this case, I've used "overlay" of course and "soft light".

Step 9

Now create a new layer and take the radial gradient tool (g) and use "Foreground to Transparent" from dark orange (#5a472f) to orange (#fb863a). I really like to play with the blending options, this is really what gives that vibrant light effect. Take the same layer and put it to "overlay".

Step 10

The final touch, I added the word "THE" and overlay it! For "la pièce de résistance", I took a stock grunge image and put it on top of my layers and blend it to "screen". And voilà there you have it. The Revolution

World Collabs 3 Winner Artwork Tutorial by François Hoang

This is my first tutorial ever so bear with me! I wanted to thank Abduzeedo for giving me this great opportunity. I am going to show you guys how to do my own submission for the Abduzeedo World Collabs 3 : James White. First let me warned you, that I won't be telling you all the steps but I'll be giving you hints that will help you make your "own" creation.

So I'll show you my techniques of shaping the colors and creating this vibrant light effect. The idea that I wanted to project in this collaboration was to put my "own" style from the original file of James White.

I picked out the PSD file from the given link of Abduzeedo : http://abduzeedo.com/world-collabs-3-james-white I must say that I really loved the colors on the original file of James White, the colors were so warm and futuristic.

My tools of battle are: the one and only Adobe Photoshop CS3, as well a couple cans of Pepsi and most importantly the music! I can't live without music so for this artwork; I must admit that I was just kept playing one song on "repeat" and it was Adrian Lux - Teenage Crime (Axwell & Henrik B Remode). Yes! By the way, this artwork took me about 3 hours to do! Okay, let's do this!

Step 1

First, really take a close look at the layers of the PSD, to see how the designer worked on his file because we all worked on different ways. By the way, James White has a really cool simple way of working along the layers. Everything was really well separated so it was easy to for me to work on it. This collaboration was to put a little bit of me but by also respecting his part of the collaboration.

After taking a closer look to the PSD, I just "desaturated" the whole thing and restart the project with my own colors and effects. Plus, I have resized the "circle" to make more space for the final details of my submission.

Step 2

Merge all the "Shards" layers together and take out the layer visibility for now. Let's start with the background, just make a simple gradient departing from the bottom to top. I've used the color #070c35 (dark blue) to black. I really like to start my work with a dark background so this way I have more fun with the lighting!

Step 3

Now let's make "Shards" layer visible and give it some "outer glow" from the blending options. I've used the color white so it is easier for me to play with it. The white color will be the base of your lighting effect. After duplicate the "Shards" layer and you will have a solid base of the "circle".

Step 4

Now let's get the radial gradient and pick two (2) colors to create the first color layer of the "circle". I've used "foreground to transparent" on the gradient and my two colors were cyan and the dark blue (#070c35). To give more punch to the gradients, just blend the layer to "overlay".

Step 5

Now you just basically repeat the "Step 4" but you change your color cyan to "pink" and voilà! The center of your piece is now done!

Step 6

Now you've setup the "circle" color base, here comes the "Fun Part". This is the part where you can be really creative with the lighting because now everything that will matter , is how the colors will blend in different kind of effects. As long as the base of your artwork is solid, the rest is up to you.

For my part, I added some white blurry shapes of white circles to give some more lighting to the "circle". I also added some lines and shapes and played with the blending options.

Step 7

I add further color shapes around the "circle" and blended them with the lines. After I've created some more shapes and afterwards added some "cloud" stock brushes in the background.

Step 8

Now activate the "Sparks" layer and change the foreground color to cyan. After I duplicate the very same layer and do a rotation of 180 degrees and place it at the bottom of the "circle". Now you have the "Sparks" all around it.

I also added some finishing touches like a stock image of a "Lighting Sparkle". I just played with it, I duplicated it and blended it and created some more sparkles! I also added some particles brushes processing their way along the lines. The artwork looks pretty done but not yet! There's still a few steps away!

Step 9

Now create a rectangle of about 30 pixels and set the background color to a beige color (#ecd193). Duplicate it and place it all around the artwork. My idea behind this beige border was to pay a little tribute to James White. This has been part of this style so I wanted to honor his trademark.

Step 10

Now take the very same layers of the beige rectangle and put an opacity of 40% and rotate them a little just to give an effect of borders overlaying themselves.

Step 11

Now for the piece of resistance, I've decided to put the middle circle layer on and give it some outer glow from the blending options. To finalize my submission, I've put the logo of James White - Signalnoise right in the middle. This last touch is the one that completes my World Collabs 3 submission.

Lens Flare Revisited in Pixelmator

In this tutorial I will show you how to create a very neat lens flare effect in Pixelmator. It’s true: the terrifying lens flare is back, and it can be really cool to use as wallpaper, as I’ve been doing.

This tutorial is part of series of tutorials I have been writing for the Pixelmator Learn site.

Step 1

Open Pixelmator and create a new document. Go to View > Show Gradients. Create a new radial gradient using purple (#4b0026) and black for the colors. Fill the background with the radial gradient so the purple is in the center.

Step 2

Add a new layer and change the Blending to Color Dodge, then create a new gradient preset. Use Radial for the type and black and white for the color. Fill the new layer with this gradient so the white is in the middle. Because of the color dodge, you will already have a really nice light effect.

Step 3

Add a new layer. Using the Rectangular Marquee Tool (M), create a rectangle and fill it with black, then create a narrower rectangle and fill it with white. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use 10-15 for the Radius.

Step 4

Change the Blending of the rectangle to Color Dodge to create another light effect.

Step 5

Duplicate the layer that has the rectangle light effect and move it down slightly. Resize it to make it thinner.

Step 6

Add a few more light streaks using the same technique.

Step 7

Add a new layer and fill it with black. Change the Blending to Color Dodge. Using the Brush Tool (B), select a regular soft brush with white, then create a few vertical lines in the center of the document. To make the effect more realistic, go to Filter > Blur > Motion Blur. Use 90º for the Angle and 20 for the Amount.

Step 8

Add a new layer and change the Blending to Color Dodge, then create a new gradient preset using black, white, and black for the colors. This way you will create a white ellipse. Fill the layer with this gradient. Use the image below for reference.

Step 9

Go to Layer > Add Layer Mask. Fill the layer mask with black using the Paint Bucket Tool (N). With the Brush Tool (B) and white for the color, paint over the areas you want to make visible. Use a very soft brush.

Step 10

Using the same technique as in the previous effect, add another ellipse as in the image below.

Step 11

Add a new layer and fill it with black using the Paint Bucket Tool (N). With the Brush Tool (B) and white, create a few white spots like sparkles, then go to Filter > Blur > Zoom Blur. Use 40 for the Amount.

Step 12

With the Brush Tool (B) paint a few spots with blue and green. Change the Blending to Soft Light with 50% Opacity.

Step 13

Add a new layer and go to Filter > Generator > Lenticular Halo. Use the image below for values, then change the Blending to Soft Light.

Step 14

Add a new layer on the top of the others, make sure you have black and white for the colors, and go to Filter > Generator > Stripes. Use 2 for the Width and 0 for the Sharpness. Change the Blending to Color Dodge with 20% Opacity.

Step 15

Go to Edit > Rotate 90º Right. Then resize to fill the entire width of the document.

Step 16

Still with the stripes layer selected, go to Layer > Add Layer Mask. With the layer mask selected, go to Filter > Generator > Clouds. In this way you will make lines visible only when the clouds are white. If you want to hide the lines more, just go to Image > Levels and increase the black.

Step 17

Add a new layer on top of the others and fill it with yellow. Then change the Blending to Multiply at 35% to give that sort of Lomo/vintage look.

Step 18

Select all layers and duplicate them. With all duplicated layers selected, go to Layer > Merge Layers, then to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use 20 for the Radius, then change the Blending to Overlay and the Opacity to 20%.

Step 19

Duplicate the blurry layer and change the Blending to Screen.

Order of Layers

Conclusion

When you finish these steps, you should pretty much have the effect below. As you can see, there’s nothing super difficult or new about it but applying blending and blurs. With this technique you can create all sorts of light effects. You can also play with different color overlays as we did with yellow, and you can use blue, green, or even red for different effects.

Hexagons Bokeh Effect in Pixelmator

More than two years ago, I created an image of a digital bokeh using Pixelmator that became incredibly popular on the Internet. I easily created the image using Pixelmator’s filter, which was new at the time, called Defocus. I simply applied the filter and added a gradient overlay layer to create the effect. Therefore, in this tutorial, I will show you how to create a bokeh effect in a slightly different, but simple manner to achieve a beautiful outcome.

Step 1

Open Pixelmator and fill the background layer with a very dark grey color (#0a0a0a).

Step 2

Add a new layer and change the Blending to Color Dodge. Go to Filter > Quartz Composer > Generator > Floor. Use the default values.

Step 3

Add another layer and fill it with black. Next, change the Blending to Color Dodge. With this new layer selected, go to Filter > Quartz Composer > Generator > Defocus. This filter is random, so you will not be able to replicate the same effect I created.

Step 4

Duplicate the layer with the hexagons layer. If there are some areas that are too bright, use the Eraser Tool (E) to erase them.

Step 5

Duplicate the layer once again.

Step 6

Duplicate the layer again and go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Use 60 for the amount. Once again, change the Blending to Color Dodge.

Step 7

Add another layer and go to Filter > Generator > Stripes. Use 2 for the width and 0 for the sharpness.

Step 8

Go to Edit > Free Transform. Rotate the stripes 30º to match the hexagons. Then, change the Blending to Color Dodge.

Step 9

With the stripes layer selected, go to Layer > Add Layer Mask. Select the layer mask thumb over the layer palette and then go to Filter > Generator > Clouds. Use the clouds filter to mask the stripes.

Step 10

Add a new layer on top of the others, but beneath the stripe layers. Fill this new layer with black. Then, change the Blending to Color Dodge. Next, select the Brush Tool (B). Using a basic, but very soft brush, start painting to add some white some flares to your design.

Step 11

Add another layer, fill it with black, and change the Blending to Color Dodge. With the Brush Tool (B), select the clouds default brush. Then, with white paint, add some clouds over one area.

Step 12

Go to Filter > Blur > Zoom Blur. Place the controller at the center of the area where you want to create the light burst. Then, change the amount to 60.

Step 13

Add a new layer on top of the floor layer and beneath the other layers. Change the blending to overlay. With the Gradient Tool (G), fill the layer with a gradient. I am using a gradient with yellow, red, and blue.

Step 14

Here you can see the order of the layers.

Conclusion

Here is the final result of this tutorial. As you can see, we only used basic filters and blended modes to create this effect. We did not utilize any stock photo to achieve these effects. One of the best features of Pixelmator is its speed. You complete this tutorial relatively quickly because the filters are fast. Now, it is up to you.

Abduzeedo 2010 Light Effects in Photoshop

A few weeks ago I posted a tutorial showing how I created the new Abduzeedo's 2010 symbol, which will be used for icons, posters, t-shirts and other gears. That tutorial was about the Illustrator walk-through process and in the end there was the light effect version of the symbol that I created in Photoshop.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create that effect. It's a sort of monitor/halftone effect mixed with glows and other light effects. We will play with Blend Modes and Blurs. The whole process is quite simple and it won't take more than 20 minutes to achieve the same result.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. I used A4 for the size. Also RGB colors. After that double click on the background layer and apply a Layer Style to it. Use Gradient Overlay. For the colors use black and in the center a dark blue. For the Style use Radial.

Step 2

Import the vector object from Illustrator and paste it in the center of the document.

Step 3

Duplicate the layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius.

Step 4

After the gaussian blur, go to Layer>Layer Styles>Inner Shadow. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge, use white for the color and 40% for the Opacity. For the Angle use 90º. For the Distance use 91 pixels, for the Choke use 0 and for the Size use 3 pixels.

Step 5

With the duplicated layer, duplicate it again because we will need another layer with the symbol for the effect. Then select one of the and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 100 pixels for the Radius. This layer will be on top of the other one with inner shadow.

Step 6

With the third copy of the symbol, select it and go to Layer>Layer Style>Color Overlay. Use white for the color. Then go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 10 pixels for the Radius. After that with the layer selected go to Layer>Group Layers. The layer will be inside a folder in the Layer Palette. Select the group and change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge. You will have a really cool light effect like the image below.

Step 7

Add a layer on top of the other layers and select the Paint Bucket Tool (G). Change the type from Foreground to Pattern, then select a dotted pattern. You can download the pattern I used here. As you can see the background is black and the dots are white.

Step 8

Go to Edit>Transform>Warp. For the Warp type select Fisheye. Then pull the little controller down to change the fisheye effect.

Step 9

Change the Blend Mode of the pattern layer to Color Dodge and the glowing areas will have this sort of monitor, halftone effect.

Conclusion

This light effect it's pretty much the same effect I use to create the Abduzeedo's logo effect. However I added a few Layer Styles to increase the light effects, especially in the edges. As you could see the whole process is pretty simple and it can be done in 20 minutes or less. It's all about playing with the tool ;)

Reader Tutorial: Colorful Light Effect in GIMP

I was browsing the other day and saw a Sony-Ericsson Xperia X1 with a beautiful wallpaper on it and thought to myself "Can I make one that looks like it but using only GIMP?"

And guess what? I could! And with this tutorial so can you.

Step 1

We first create a new document, you can make it any size, though I used 1600 x 1200. Setting by default Black as your Foreground color, we can ask in the advanced options to use it as our background.

Step 2

We now create a new layer, this time it should be transparent.

Step 3

Using Filters > Render > Clouds > Solid Noise we fill our New Layer. Play with the values until you find the one that works for you, I preferred to size it 6 in both X and Y.

Step 4

Set the New Layer opacity to something between 15 and 30. I went with 20. While we are at it, rename this Layer to Clouds.

Step 5

Create a New Layer and using the Rectangle Selection Tool (R) create a rectangle that's as wide as your document but only 10 pixels in height. Fill that with #cccccc. Duplicate this layer 3 times.

Step 6

Select the lowest Line Layer, go to Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur and select 70 as your Blur Radius.

Repeat this step for the next two layers above it, only setting the Blur Radius to 30 for one and 10 for

the other.

There should be still one Line Layer with no Gaussian Blur above them all.

Step 7

Create a new layer and use the Stripes Fine pattern to fill it. We'll call it ScanLines.

Step 8

Create another new layer and fill it with using the Blend Tool (L) and the Full saturation spectrum CW gradient from left to right (Press the Ctrl Key to keep your line horizontal). We'll call this one Colorful.

Step 9

Place the ScanLines Layer below the last of the Line Layers.

Step 10

Go to Filters > Blur > Motion Blur and use 256 in Lenght at an angle of 90 degrees on the Clouds Layer.

The Final Touch

We add the logo and duplicate it twice and using Filters > Blur > Gaussian Blur by 70 and 10 each, leaving the third, without any Gaussian Blurring, on top of them and making sure they arebelow the Colorful Layer.

You can play with it by inserting another layer and filling it with black, painting some circles and applying Gaussian Blurr and setting this layer just above the Clouds Layer and setting its mode to Multiply.

Very Easy Heroes Eclipse in Photoshop

The new season of Heroes is on and it's really good. While I was watching the last episode I saw the opening credits and I thought to myself, why I haven't done that effect yet. So I decided to create the Heroes eclipse effect in Photoshop with a litle extra retro style.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a nice eclipse effect using only Photoshop. We will add a texture in the end just to give that retro feel to the image.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. Add a new layer and with the Gradient Tool (G), fill the background with a Radial Gradient from black to a very light grey in the center.

Step 2

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Use 15 for the Hue, 35 for the Saturation and -15 for the Lightness.

Step 3

With the Ellipse Tool (U), create an ellipse in the center of the image.

Step 4

Again with the Ellipse Tool (U) create a bigger ellipse. Then go to Layer>Layer Style>Stroke. Use 60px for the Radius and white for the color. Then go to Layer>Layer Style>Create Layer. That command will create a layer with the Stroke. So select the 2 layers that will have for the ellipse with stroke and go to Layer>Merge Layers.

After that duplicate this layer because we will need 2 copies of it.

Step 5

Select one of the "ring" layers and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 100 pixels for the Radius. Also change the Blend Mode to Screen.

Step 6

Add a new folder in the Layer Palette and move the other ring into this folder. Change the folder's Blend Mode to Color Dodge, then select the ring layer and go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 35 for the Radius.

Step 7

Add a new folder in the Layer Palette right on top of the gradient layer. Then change the Blend Mode of the folder to Color Dodge. After that add a new layer inside the folder and with the Brush Tool (B), use white for the color and a big soft brush to create the light behind the black circle.

Step 8

Add another layer still inside of the folder we have just created the light beneath the black planet. Select the Gradient Tool (G) and edit the gradient. Change the Type to Noise, the Roughness to 100% and select Restrict Colors and Add Transparency. Fill the new layer with the gradient like the image below.

Step 9

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Saturation to -100. After that go to Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. Use 20 pixels for Radius.

Step 10

Select the Folder with the light layers and go to Layer>Layer Mask>Reveal All. Then select the Brush Tool (B) with a very soft brush and black for the color. Start painting over the Layer Mask to hide some parts of the layer (1-3)

Step 11

The ring of light is too white so lets add some color. Select the layer with the ring of light that you applied more blur (Step 5), then go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Use 30 for the Hue, 35 for the Saturation and -70 for the Lightness.

Step 12

Add a new layer on top of the other layers and go to Filter>Render>Clouds. Change the Blend Mode to Color Dodge and the Opacity to 20%.

Step 13

With the Eraser Tool (E) delete areas of the smoke as well (1-4). The idea is just to add some noise and waves to the lights.

Step 14

Now, add a layer on top of the black ellipse. Then with the Brush Tool (B) paint a light at the top right corner of the ellipse. You can, also, add another layer and repeat the Steps 8 and 9 to create some rays of light. But start the gradient from the center of the light effect and not the document's

Step 15

Add another layer on top of the others and fill it with a beige color (#B59071), then change the Opacity to 20%.

Step 16

Import an old paper texture and put it on top of the other layers. The one I used was a courtesy of Shutterstock and you can download it here. After that change the Blend Mode to Overlay.

Step 17

Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Hue and Saturation. Use 0 for the Hue, -25 for the Saturation and 0 for the Lightness.

Step 18

Now go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels. Increase the Black input to 30. That will make the image darker.

Conclusion

The whole process won't take more than 30 minutes and it's pretty straightforward. The idea of this tutorial was to show you how to create some light effects first using greyscale and then with the Hue and Saturation we add nice colors. Now it's up to you, it's really important that you try different settings and colors as well.

Stylish Light Effect in Photoshop

One of the most popular tutorials I have writen is the Sparkling Hot Girl in Photoshop. It was a very straightforward technique on how to create some nice light effects mixed with a hot girl. Everything over a dark background. Since then I have received emails asking me how to create light effects over white or light backgrounds. So I decided to try some ideas and create an image mixing a photo of a girl with some light effects.

So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a very stylish image mixing light effects and a hot girl photo over a light background. We will play with Blend Modes and Adjustment Layers to achieve that.

Step 1

Open Photoshop and create a new document. After that import a photo to your document, the one I used is courtesy of Shutterstock and you can donwload it here.

Step 2

Go to Image>Adjustemtns>Hue and Saturation. Reduce the Saturation to -65.

Step 3

Now go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Gradient Map. Use Black and White for the colors and select Dither and Reverse. After that change the Blend Mode to Soft Light.

Step 4

Duplicate the layer of the girl, this new layer will be on top of the original girl layer. Go to Filter>Other>High Pass. User 5 pixels for the Radius and press OK. After that change the Blend Mode to Hard Light.

Step 5

Select the layer girl and go to Filter>Sharpen>Unsharp Mask. Use 90% for the Amount, 7 for the Radius and 0 for the Threshold.

Step 6

Duplicate the girl layer again and put it on top of the other layers. Go to Filter>Stylize>Glowing Edges. Use 1 for the Edge Width, 2 for the Edge Brightness and 2 for the Smoothness.

Step 7

With the glowing edges layer selected, go to Image>Adjustments>Desaturate. You will have white lines now for the strokes, so just change the Blend Mode to Screen. Tip: You can make the lines stronger by going to Image>Adjustments>Levels and increasing the white input.

Step 8

Create a layer on top of the others and with the Gradient Tool (G) use black and white for the colors and Radial for the Type to fill the layer with a gradient. Change the Blend Mode to Multiply and reduce the opacity until you get a very subtle gradient effect. Use the image below for reference.

Step 9

To create the first light effect I will use a photo of a star, you can download it here. Copy just the part of the photo you want and paste it in the document. After that change the Blend Mode to Screen so what is black will be totally transparent. You will have a nice light effect over her shoulder.

Step 10

Go to Image>Adjustments>Hue and Saturation. Select Colorize and then move the Hue until you get a nice pink color, I used 300 for the Hue and 50 for the Saturation.

Step 11

Create a and with the Brush Tool (B) and a very soft round brush select a light blue for the color and paint a spot of blue light (1). Add another layer and again with the Brush Tool (B) and the same brush, just select a green for the color and paint another spot of light (2). Change the Blend Mode of these 2 layers to Screen.

Step 12

I wanted to add some nice effects like particles coming off of her body. To do that I create an explosion in Cinema 4D, it's very simple but I won't get in details this time. You can download the image I used here.

Step 13

Import the image in Photoshop and place it in your document. After that go to Image>Adjustments>Invert. That way you will get black particles instead of white. Then just change the Blend Mode to Multiply in order to make what is white become transparent. Move this first image to her back like the image below.

Step 14

Use again the same image but resize it a little bit and rotate it. It's very important to place both images trying to make it match the black areas of the girls blouse.

Step 15

With the Eraser Tool (E) use a very small brush and delete some areas to make the edges of the girl less uniform on those areas that there are the particles.

Step 16

Now just place a nice texture on top of the other layers, I'm using a concrete texture courtesy of Shutterstock. You can donwload it here. Also you can add more elements like a milk splash I added on her leg.

Conclusion

You can finish the design with some fine tuning, like reducing the size of some elements and add more details. The effect is just a mix of some other techniques I have already explained how to do them. Light effects with light backgrounds are always tricky because we need dark areas to make them visible also textures always give a nice touch to any design. The idea of this tutorial was just to create a nice and stylish light effect like the Sparkling hot girl but with a light background.

This is a simpler version without the particles.

Amazing Light Paintings

Light paintings, also known as light drawing or light graffiti, is a photography technique in which exposures are usually made at night or in a darkened room. The images we are featuring here are from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza, the guys behind LAPP-PRO. The light art performance photography (briefly LAPP) is a one-shot, long time bulb exposure photography, performed additionally with movement of light. LAPP originates on a real-time basis directly in front of the camera, created between opening and closing the shutter.

The work from Jan Wöllert and Jörg Miedza was suggested by one of our readers, longo, who mentioned these guys and asked us for a post about them. As they have some really amazing photos, we made this selection to show you here. Long exposure photography involving light effects are really awesome. In writing this post, I remembered the statement, "In photography, it's all about light." I would say that it all depends on the effect that you want to produce - the correct light, the right amount of light, extra light, 'moving' light and maybe no light! Personally, I really liked LAPP-PRO's photos. They are pure art! And thanks to longo for the great suggestion! Enjoy. :)
