Our goal for 2012 was to focus on excellent work in all fields but with a special attention to Visual Identity. Nowadays design has become a great differentiator in terms of how people perceive companies and products in general. The visual identity is the first contact customer has with those and that's why we love it and will be posting more about that.

In this post we will showcase Dronninga a beautiful Visual Identity work from Kristian Tennebø, a designer from Oslo, Norway. You can find out more about him at http://www.dinamo.no

Dronninga landskap is one of Norways leading landscape architects. To tell the story of craftsmanship and tradition, we made a labyrinth of the letter D, which became the most important element of the new identity. The classical labyrinth is a universal symbol for landscape arcitechts and can be traced back to medieval times. For them it represents a way of thinking and catalyst for how they attack their projects.

As in nature, the feeling of touch and perspective, became an important feature in the new identity. Tactile uncoated papers, wide range of embossing, screenprinting, varnishes and
all routed elements in their signage.

Nike Laces by Hugo Silva

Hugo Silva is a graphic designer and illustrator from Lisbon. He works in the design industry for over 4 years focusing on identity, corporate, editorial, packaging and illustration. Hugo has a BA Graphic Design and a Master Design Visual Culture at IADE-Creative University.

RAWZ Logo Design Process

We over at Abduzeedo always think in ways to find great inspiration to be featured on the blog as well as help people to promote their work. It's quite hard sometimes to curate the amout of work we receive via email and social network links. That was the context that we had in mind when we created RAWZ. We wanted a simple way for people share their work and inspiration with us, it would be a raw version of Abduzeedo. No curation.

The idea for the logo also was inspired by the concept of being raw. No symbol just the word and a very customized typoface. So in this sort of tutorial, case study we will show you the steps that took to us to come up with the logo.

Step 1 - References

The word RAWZ is very short and it has some nice characters to play with like A, W and Z. The idea was come up with a very simple font with no much details, as the name suggested, very raw style. Looking for some inspiration we found some nice examples of how to play with characters, especially the well known Avant Garde and of course the classic from the 80s Over the Top.

Step 2 - Sketches

With some references and ideas in mind it was time to sketch them out. That is without any doubt one of the most important parts of the process because you can try lots of variations very quickly. You can also see if the idea you had was as nice in real life as it was in your head.

Step 3 - Computer

After a few sketches we got a quite interest idea to explore in terms of typography so it was time to open Illustrator and make it happen. Using the Line Segment Tool and the Pen Tool we created the letters. As you can see, we started with the A then with that symbol we created the W by flipping it vertically and duplicating it. There are some other interesting details like deleting part of the middle area of the W, connecting the Z and the R.

Step 4

Once we finishing creating the paths we started playing with stroke sizes and edge styles. In this case we tried rounded edges but it wasn't that raw hah! Also the R wasn't right because of the angle of the top part.

Step 5

The first thing to do here was to created a simplified version of the R. Also we went back to sharp edges. But the angle wasn't right.

Step 6

Time to keep the lines straight. The A and W break the baseline and the to alignment creating a really nice effect. Also we tried lighter and bolder versions here until we decided that this one was the best.

Step 7

In order to give a stylish look we decided to add a hairline inner stroke in the center of the word. It created a really nice effect sort of mixing vintage with a very modern fontface.

Conclusion

To make it a little bit friendlier we added some rounded corners, very subtle but it definitely gives a nice touch.

As you can see in this quick case study, creating a logo is much more than playing with Illustrator, there's always some goals to reach and message to pass along. Tutorials don't exactly show the whole creative process but they give you an idea of the workflow. I hope that might help you to come up with your own workflow in the future.

Corporate and Brand Identity: Taiama by Roger Oddone

Corporate and brand identity is much more than just graphics, it's all about the strategy and image a company wants to express to their audience. Creating this type of work requires knowledge on an array of design subjects including, color theory, typography, form and materials. For this post I would like to feature the work of a great friend of mine, Roger Oddone. It's the brand identity for a business called Taiama.

Roger says that Taiama is the name of a bird that flies low over the water surface with the lower part of the beak skimming the water foraging for fish.

The shapes and colors of the bird served as inspiration for the stylized symbol of Taiama.

The typeface was based on circular forms that follow the same visual language of the symbol.

Great Collection of Visual Identities

Design a logo is just a part of the process of creating a visual identity. There are so many different applications that we, as designers, have to think about and then design them. That can be business cards, brochures, envelopes and other collaterals. Now, it's very important to have in mind that this process is not simply placing the logo and that's it. Every piece has to be thought and created to commnunicate the goals and image of the company we're designing for.

Corporate visual identity plays a significant role in the way an organization presents itself to both internal and external stakeholders. In general terms, a corporate visual identity expresses the values and ambitions of an organization, its business, and its characteristics. Branding: Zune vs. Ipod

What is important for a product to succeed? Being released first? Having the most advanced technology? Having more features? Some of these questions are always asked either we are about to launch a new service, product or even for our design jobs. The Zune case is very interesting. Even though it has a better hardware, more features and even, I believe, more money invested in promotion, it has not been able to beat the iPod.

It is very interesting to follow these battles between brands, such as Coca vs. Pepsi, iPod vs. Zune or even Mac vs. PC. We have been posting some articles showing some of this strategies, and today let's talk a bit about the iPod x Zune.

I believe everyone knows the Apple iPod and probably the Microsoft Zune as well. When Apple released the iPod, they showed to the world that you don't need neither the best hardware nor the most featured equipment to succeed, rather, what matters is the user experience. With a nice strategy of highlighting the simplicity, with slogans such as "1000 musics in your pocket", the iPod became a hallmark in gadgets history.

"Microsoft launched several campaigns to jump-start the Zune. The company had a major campaign to promote Zune with "Music the way it wants to be" as a major theme and "Welcome to the social" as an advertisement tagline. Also, the company enlisted about 300 "Zune masters" to advertise the device on American college campuses, to promote the item, and to run Zune-related events. In exchange, they received free merchandise, including a Zune..."

Microsoft saw the potential market, a bit late as usual, and decided to release their own Mp3 player which they called Zune. It has always had many much better hardware (along with the money investiment for promos). Even with all that, it was a failure. With slogans such as "Welcome to the Social", they tried to sell how cool it was the fact that Zune had wi-fi built in and allowed to share songs with your peers.

"The choice of branding and distribution were part of the Zune as a decision of two strategies in the market right now: cross-brand ecosystems... and singular brand ecosystems... The former is gaining in share and units sold, but the latter has enormous share and won't give that up easily."

In terms of marketing and sales Zune wasn't able to beat Apple and the iPod, however in terms of investing in creative people to promote their service, Microsoft, without any doubt, put together a legion of amazing designers and digital artists to create ads for them, guys such as Adhemas Batista, Doug Alves, Si Scott and many more....

One thing is clear: in this battles, the only winner is us consumers, who are in the middle of a war, but in a good way. A war to see which company will be able to please us with the best product. Talking about slogans, I didn't many Zune ones, so that makes clear that Microsoft doesn't try to make it look good as much as Apple does. There's a full section in Wikipedia dedicated to Ipod slogans. Here are some:
